This response ended up being just over 5000 words long so I had to put it under a cut. Thank you so much for sending this question in, it’s a topic that I’m fascinated by but have a lot of scattered thoughts about. I usually have a theme that I’m trying to go around when I write these, but this time I didn’t, so I went in chronological order and offered my thoughts on as many aspects of the relationship as I could think of. The beginning is quite ramble-y but as my thoughts developed they became more structured. This probably isn’t what you or anyone wanted when you sent the ask in, but I got excited. This hasn’t been proofread so please forgive any spelling or grammatical errors I know I’ll find later. I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Tl;dr: Kakashi goes from being the biggest source of Sasuke’s feelings of safety, support, and security to being one of the biggest sources of Sasuke’s insecurity, feelings of being misunderstood, and mistrust of others.
