1. original series kisame:kind of brutish sidekick to itachi who loves fighting and is kind of unsettling but that's about it.
  2. shippuden kisame:complete fucking sweetheart who cares so much about itachi it's one of the sweetest relationships in the show and this is accompanied by a surprisingly submissive nature towards the latter which stems from his loneliness and crippling self doubt in his youth which was pacified by itachi reassuring him that he isn't comprised of the perceptions others have of him and his identity is what he makes of it and life is in its entirety about the human capacity to exist without trying to be one thing or the other and the culmination of that existence allows one to realize oneself in the bitter end and that is ultimately who we are. a very loyal and vulnerable man whose reasons for villainy were shrouded in mystery for the longest time, often speculated to be something akin to his comrades; power, money, religion, overall self-serving motives but as it turned out the most monstrous member of the akatsuki was seeking nothing more than a reason to live and a sense of identity, a profound and heartfelt character point only revealed within the last moments of his life, making the audience almost feel a sense of guilt for assuming the worst of him. but, after biting his own tongue off to avoid revealing intel, using his sheer physical strength to break free from restraints and deciding to kill himself so that the akatsuki's secrets would never be revealed, he remembers his dearest friend's words about not knowing one's true self until death, and thinking of him, finally realizes that despite 30+ years of believing himself to be no better than a monster, he isn't and never was a bad person. then, being devoured by his own sharks that he summoned, he dies for something he believes in and one can only hope that he was at peace. truly one of kishimoto's best writing choices in the entire series. a monument to the inhumanity of man and the humanity of those we'd pass judgement on without attempting to understand them. really makes you think about how many people became "monsters" simply because no one ever listened, no one ever helped, and no one ever cared. startlingly profound commentary on morality and existentialism.
  3. kishimoto:*kills this guy and makes a whole movie about the main characters' kids and can somehow live with that choice???????????????????*
